In an effort to make Lee County a dementia-caring community, local stakeholders have partnered with the Florida Department of Elder Affairs for the Dementia Care and Cure Initiative (DCCI).
Currently, there are more than 21,000 estimated cases of Alzheimer’s disease in Lee County. While Alzheimer’s and related dementias can have profound effects on those living with the disease and their caregivers, it shouldn’t limit them from enjoying many activities within the community.
The DCCI task force is providing a free educational module on dementia sensitivity for local businesses and organizations. Participants will gain a better understanding of dementia, learn how to provide a welcoming, respectful environment, and discover local resources to assist those living with the disease – as well as their caregivers and family members.
Partner organizations of the DCCI task force include Lee Health, the Area Agency on Aging, the Lee County Sheriff’s Office, Alvin A. Dubin Alzheimer’s Resource Center, Alzheimer’s Association, Hope Healthcare, the Department of Elder Affairs, the City of Fort Myers, Right at Home, and Florida Gulf Coast University.
