More than 8,000 people walked, ran or cheered at the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure on March 14 in Fort Myers. Samira Beckwith led the race as Survivor of the Year.

When she was 24 years old, she dealt with Hodgkin’s Disease, a lymph nodes cancer. The experience inspired her to help others and led her to Hope Hospice.

At age 49, she learned she had breast cancer. She handled it with the same philosophy she formed when dealing with her first bout of cancer.

“I always try to look at what I can do, not what I can’t do,” Samira said.
